Stanbury, David: A Narrative Of The Voyage of HMS Beagle.

Stanbury(ed.), David - A Narrative Of The Voyage of HMS Beagle. Folio Society, 1979, 2nd impression.

The Voyage of H.M.S. Beagle ranks among the most famous voyages in the world. After five years' absence, Captain Robert FitzRoy's surveying ship returned home with the first scientific survey of most of the South American coastline (including the menacing Straits of Magellan), containing the seeds of information later to germinate in Charles Darwin's theories of evolution. FitzRoy published his narrative of the voyage in 1839 (three volumes, the last of which was by Darwin); but his own outstanding achievement has consistently been overshadowed by his colleague's genius, most previous accounts stemming entirely from Darwin's voluminous letters and Journal. This version is predominantly that of FitzRoy, the professional sailor, who for five years shared his adventures (and his cabin in the constricted quarters of the Beagle) with Darwin, endlessly discussing their ideas. However, a continuous counterpoint of extracts from Darwin's diary and letters, and from those of other members of the crew, give extra significance to a fascinating story which illuminates almost every facet of the world of Nature from the origins of earthquakes to the source of life itself (Folio Society).
