Valle, Pietro Della: The Pilgrim.

Valle, Pietro Della - The Pilgrim. Folio Society, 1989, 1st thus. Translated, abridged and introduced by George Bull. PIETRO DE LA VALLE was a romantic. Born in 1586 of an illustrious Italian family which boasted two cardinals, he wooed the girl of his choice for twelve years, and when her family gave her to another, left Italy, vowing never to return until he had set foot in the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Twelve years of travels took him to Turkey, Persia and India, and were recorded in three books, of which only the Indian volume has ever before appeared in English. Yet Pietro de la Valle was a man whose intrepid spirit, natural curiosity and knowledge of languages made him the perfect guide to a colourful and turbulent world. In this book, specially commissioned by The Folio Society, George Bull, translator of Machiavelli, Michelangelo and Vasari, has distilled an unforgettable Renaissance adventure from all three volumes. Pietro's amorous disappointments were quickly forgotten. He fell in love with an Assyrian 'girl in Baghdad, married her and took her with him through Persia. When she died ofa fever the distraught husband had her body embalmed, and thus she accompanied him to India and back to Italy. 'The Pilgrim's' travels brought him fame and fortune, and reading his book it is not hard to see why. His descriptive powers, his sympathy with his fellow men, his eye for oddity and eccentricity, his interest in everything from cuneiform writing to musical instruments, ensure him a place among the great historical travel writers.
